Heat Pump Installation in Winchester and Hampshire Covering the Southampton Area

Modern heat pumps have refrigeration cycles which convert a low temperature energy into a high temperature energy. You can use them to heat or cool properties, either through the radiators, via an underfloor heating system or with an air convector. Heat pumps also warm water to supply the taps of baths, sinks and basins, or for you to use when showering.

Because heat pump installations heat and cool rapidly, it makes them better for the environment. Homes in Southampton, Winchester and the surrounding areas with a gas boiler typically use 1kWp of energy to generate a single kilowatt of heat power. A heat pump can generate four times the power for the same amount of energy used (1kWp).

There are two different heat pumps we can use:

Air-Source Heat Pump – This pump absorbs heat from the outside air and transfers it into the home. Property owners can choose air-to-air heat pumps, which warm internal temperatures, and air-to-water heat pumps which regulate hot water supplies.

Ground-Source Heat Pump – This heat pump extracts heat from the ground and transfers it into the home using a continuous loop of pipe. Water circulates through the pipe, absorbing the earth’s heat. Heat pumps transfer this heat into your circuit.

Air-Source Heat Pump Installation

MS Renewables mount air-source heat pumps onto walls or fix them into a ground position. The main unit needs a sheltered spot that won’t be impacted by rain, wind or curious passers-by. Installers will need to check that there is a sufficient clearance of 200mm for wall-mounted heat pump installations. Floor systems will need significantly more clearance space.

Installation covers an indoor and outdoor section, mounted and then connected to pipework and a refrigerant. Once insulated, the system connects directly to part of the central heating system in your Southampton, Winchester or Hampshire home.

This is normally through the boiler or the radiators.

Ground-Source Heat Pump Installation

This type of heat pump installation is a little more complex because excavation may be needed to create the space for the pipework. Those with more garden space can choose horizontal ground pipes instead. Most excavation work will fall under permitted development and won’t require planning approval from your local authority unless you are in a conservation area.

The pipework feeds to the heat pump, transferring heat from the ground in much the same way an air-source-heat pump transfers heat from air. Again, with this installation type, we would normally connect directly to your central heating.

Prior to installing a heat pump, we strongly advise that you have the energy performance of homes in Southampton, Winchester and the surrounding areas assessed. We can take care of this for you, although some homeowners prefer to use an independent assessor. Following the inspection, you will be issued an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).

The standard of installation on your property has a direct effect on the type of heat pump installation you choose and how efficient the pump will be. Compared to standard gas boilers, heat pumps create warmth at lower but more consistent temperatures, which makes insulation especially important.

MS Renewables also undertakes heat pump servicing and repair work to keep your installation running optimally.
